A Unique or An Unique?
Just another note about the challenges of the English language. Why "a unique..." rather than "an unique..."? When a "u" word is pronounced as though it begins with a "y" (yoo nique), it's treated more like the consonant sound of the y. So, a university, an umbrella, a usual day, an unusual day.
요약하면 unique의 첫 발음이 'y' 로 자음의 발음이므로 an 보다는 a를 쓴다는 것이다.
같은 원리로 하면 a university, an umbrella, a usual day, an unusual day 와 같은 예가 가능하다.
보통 우리나라 말 쓸 때는 그냥 익숙한대로 사용하다 보니 이런 저런 원리는 제쳐두기 마련인데
외국어는 그만큼 익숙하지 않아서 원리를 모르면 우문을 쓰게 되는 경우가 많다.
사실 영어로 뭔가를 쓸 때를 생각해보면
문장 전체를 쓰는 것은 짧은 voca로도 사전 찾아가며 하면 어찌어찌 되지만
정작 시간을 쓰는 부분은 이처럼 단복수를 맞추는 일이나 사소한? 전치사류를 고르는(찾는) 일이다.
결국 detail을 모르면 뭘 해도 어설프게 보이는 법이다.
